Founded by Nitin Udmale, Filmytell aims to provide independent, regional and small and mid-budget filmmakers with another avenue to distribute their content digitally.
Addressing the Distribution Challenge
Producing a film is only one part of the filmmaking journey. For smaller productions, securing theatrical screens, managing promotional expenses and obtaining conventional OTT opportunities can be difficult.
Filmytell’s model attempts to address this challenge by creating a direct digital route between content creators and audiences. Instead of depending entirely on theatrical releases or subscription OTT agreements, filmmakers can use a rental-based digital model to reach viewers.
The “Pocket Theatre” Concept
Filmytell describes its approach as “India’s Pocket Theatre.” The concept allows viewers to rent selected movies and watch them digitally, rather than requiring a monthly subscription for access to a broader catalogue.
The model is designed to give audiences greater choice while helping producers maintain ownership of their content and control over rental pricing.
Focus on Regional and Independent Stories
A significant part of Filmytell’s positioning is its focus on India’s diverse regional cinema.
The platform aims to support content in languages including Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Assamese, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Punjabi, along with other Indian languages.
Its content vision also extends beyond mainstream feature films to include short films, documentaries, web series, mini-series and vertical dramas.
Bringing Cinema Closer to Bharat
Filmytell is particularly interested in audiences across Tier-2, Tier-3 and rural India. The increasing availability of smartphones and affordable internet has created new opportunities for digital entertainment consumption outside major cities.
For audiences who may have limited access to theatres or who prefer content in their regional languages, digital distribution can provide another way to discover and watch films.
The platform’s focus on language-based discovery, recommendations, trailers and content sharing is intended to make this process easier.
Built Around the Viewer
The philosophy behind Filmytell places considerable importance on the audience. Its founder, Nitin Udmale, describes this approach through the idea “Audience is Bhagwan.”
His professional background includes an agriculture education, selection as a Class-One Officer through MPSC and later experience in business management with BP Energy. His exposure to villages, small towns and emerging markets contributed to his understanding of rural consumers and their entertainment preferences.
This perspective has influenced Filmytell’s emphasis on affordability, accessibility and regional relevance.
Expanding Across Digital Screens
Filmytell’s E-Theatre concept is being developed for multiple viewing environments, including Android, iOS and web, as well as connected-TV platforms such as Android TV, Google TV, Samsung TV, LG TV, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.
The broader objective is to create an entertainment ecosystem where audiences can access different forms of Indian storytelling through the devices they already use.
A New Possibility for Indian Cinema
Filmytell represents an effort to explore a different path for film distribution—one that combines digital accessibility, pay-per-view rentals and a strong focus on regional and independent content.
As India’s entertainment audience becomes increasingly diverse in terms of language, geography and viewing habits, alternative distribution models could play an important role in helping more stories reach their intended viewers.
With its E-Theatre vision, Filmytell is working toward a simple idea: give filmmakers a direct path to audiences and give audiences more stories to choose from.
